Neurodevelopmental disorders are a range of conditions which affect how a person’s brain functions. Neurodevelopmental disorders are different from mental health conditions, but people with neurodevelopmental disorders are more at risk of developing mental health problems. Neurodevelopmental disorders occur when there are changes in the brain when the brain is developing, meaning that they usually begin very early in a person’s life.
Neurodevelopmental disorders impact people in different ways. Some people might have very mild symptoms that do not impact much on their life, and some may have severe symptoms. People with neurodevelopmental disorders might experience some of the following symptoms:
Difficulties regulating and/or expressing emotions – finding it hard to control how you feel about something or finding it hard to show how you are feeling about something
Difficulties with communication – finding it hard to communicate with other people, like not being able to say the right words that explain how you feel or sometimes not being able to talk at all
Differences in learning abilities – some people with neurodevelopmental disorders might find it very difficult to learn new things, some may find it extremely easy to learn new things, and some might find it very easy to learn about things that they are interested in and very difficult to learn about anything else
Often, neurodiversity is used when discussing autism spectrum disorder, as well as other neurological and developmental conditions such as ADHD or learning disabilities.
Neurodiveristy is the word used to describe how people experience and interact with the world around them. The term explains that everyone can experience the world differently and that there is no ‘right’ way of thinking, learning or behaving. People who are not neurodiverse are often referred to as neurotypical.
Some of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders include:
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Learning difficulties– a range of conditions which can affect how well a person can learn and how well they can function in day-to-day life
