Personality disorders are a type of mental health condition which affects how a person feels, thinks, acts, and relates to other people. People with personality disorders might react differently to situations than others. Usually, people with personality disorders have difficulties in their relationships with others.
Each personality disorder has different signs and symptoms. Sometimes, the reason why a person has developed a personality disorder is not known. In some cases, personality disorders develop after experiencing traumatic events in childhood or as a teenager. People with personality disorders might have other mental health conditions too.
There are a range of different treatments that might be used for people with personality disorders, depending on their symptoms.
Treatment can involve some form of talking therapy, which might involve discussing a person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and exploring different ways for the person to cope with these. Some people attend group therapies or social groups, and some people might be prescribed medication to help with specific symptoms, like anxious thinking or mood swings.
Every person with a personality disorder is different and has different symptoms, so treatments depend on what works best for that person and what they want to do.
Examples of personality disorders include:
Antisocial personality disorder
Narcissistic personality disorder
